Chapter Fifteen

Where is the sword?

Esteban was also having breakfast. He hadn’t slept well. Even he was concerned at his growing ill temper and he tried to be calm. It still made him angry thinking about the way Claudine had gone off through that portal with his prisoner. It still rankled that she could control that water and he could not. It was a deep source of anger in him that she was now in another world, one which should have been his. He’d bet a bagful of spells that she now had Bartholomew Pike’s spell book too, had maybe even met him, and was gaining power at that very moment. Power that would bring her back and then he would have to share the kingdom. Share everything because that was the way it worked when the female came of age and her own magic appeared. He threw his goblet at the wall and then watched the water trickle down the tapestry.

‘Where was his favorite sword, the one he had hoped to spell so that it functioned in the same way as Claudine’s?’

He got up cursing. ‘Today he was going to find it and more water spells, new ones. Spells he had not yet tried had to be found’.

Leonay had taken his place back in the queue of travelers and merchants all looking to trade something, mostly spells.

When it was his turn to state his wares he mentioned the storybook, but it was his water spells that caught a senior official’s attention and he was taken to meet with Esteban.

Esteban was in a chamber at the bottom of one of his towers. He had thrown out two merchants already for wasting his time with spells he already knew. This young man before him now had brought more water spells.

Leonay tried a smile. “Good morning your Highness, I have brought water spells from the far south. They enable the control of ancient magic hidden in fountains and one of them will make the water act like a mirror to show the viewer anything their heart desires. That is to say, you might find out where your favorite sword is your Majesty. This spell could allow you a glimpse of its whereabouts”.

Esteban gazed at Leonay as if he was about to eat him. “How do you know they work? Why would you want to sell such spells?”

Leonay did not want to tell how he had fallen on extreme hard times. How he had lost his home deep in the oceans of the west. It hurt him badly. His heart actually hurt when he thought of it.

“I am poor your Highness. I cannot continue my education unless I sell these spells. I know they work because I used one in a fountain to hide myself from an enemy and I used another to see where some of my stolen family possessions were hidden by that enemy. I have proof. I was able to retrieve some. Amongst them was this storybook that my grandfather had given me.
